Excise duty on natural gas to increase from 2025

Amendments to the Excise Tax Law stipulate that, starting January 1, 2025, excise tax on natural gas will be increased in Latvia depending on its intended use. These changes are a national initiative for more sustainable use of energy resources and a transition to environmentally friendly resources.

The new excise tax rate will be applied and visible on invoices received in February 2025 for services provided in January of this year.

Rate changes for 2025:

  • For companies that use natural gas as fuel, the rate will increase from €1.65 per megawatt hour (MWh) to €3.8.
  • If the end user is a participant in the European Union Emissions Trading System, the excise duty on natural gas used as fuel will increase from EUR 1.65 per MWh to EUR 2.08 next year.
  • The excise duty on natural gas used as fuel in industrial production and other production-related processes and for technologically necessary climate control in industrial production facilities will increase from EUR 0.55 per MWh to EUR 2.57.
  • The price of natural gas used as fuel for technological equipment for the primary processing of agricultural raw materials and for ensuring the technologically necessary climate in agricultural raw material primary processing facilities will increase from EUR 0.55 per MWh to EUR 2.57. heating of covered areas (greenhouses) used for agricultural purposes, heating of industrial poultry houses (coops) and incubators, will increase from EUR 0.55 per MWh to EUR 0.85.
